Knowing what are the benefits of a newsletter will increase sales leads when 84.3% of consumers check their emails once a day or more, according to HubSpot. Brands use newsletters to share relevant news, stories, updates, products, sales, and other information to their users, clients, partners, customers, readers, etc. Email newsletters are a popular form of advertising and reaching customers.

There are six main parts of what are the benefits of a newsletter:

  • Focuses only on Those who Want to Hear You.
  • Advertising – Keep your Brand in Your Audience’s Mind.
  • Entice customers by going over the Brand’s stance on current issues.
  • Remind Customers of Brand Values.
  • Announces Sales and/or Promotes New Products/Services.
  • Great for Analytics.

What are the Benefits of a Newsletter

Focuses Only on Those who Want to Hear You

A newsletter is only sent to those who subscribe to a mailing list so only those that think they will be interested in your message will be the ones who receive it. This will increase the open rate of the emails and create more leads per sent newsletter.

You can even create specific lists for specific types of newsletter: e.g. one for company updates, one for new products, one for sales, etc. You can use these lists to better personalize and target the groups that are interested in the specific type of newsletter.

Advertising – Keep your Brand in Your Audience’s Mind

Most advertising’s purpose is to get people thinking about the brand and its products/services. Newsletters are an excellent way to remind already existing customers and those that are on the fence of buying from the brand. It’s easier to get someone who has already bought from the brand to buy again than get someone new to the brand to buy from them.

A weekly or monthly newsletter helps remind customers that the brand exists, has items that they are interested in, and is constantly improving and adding new items for their perusal.

Entice Customers by Going Over Current Issues

Buzz words are a great way to get people (and search engines) attention, and current issues or events are among the most common for newsletters. Commenting on an issue in the industry or sympathizing for those that were hurt from an event will get readers reading and generate trust in the industry if they agree with the brand’s points. Such readers will become leads and can be enticed onto the website to look at products.

I strongly encourage that you only make comments and statements that you honestly believe about topics that you know relatively well (and admit it when you don’t). Anything else is just an unethical and wishy washy form of marketing.

Remind Your List of Brand Values

Brands should always give their potential customers reasons to buy from them rather than their competition. As well as better or more specific products, having and standing by values that are important to consumers will set apart the brand from the competition. Brands should use newsletters to show examples of how and where they stand by their values as well as reminding them what the brand’s values are.

Announces Sales and/or Promotes New Products/Services

This one should be common sense, but just because a brand came out with a new product or is conducting a sale does not mean that people know about it. Use newsletters to announce new products, services, additions to existing ones, and sales and promotions. Brands can even use a newsletter to help prepare users for the new products and sales ahead of time, broadcast when the item or sale drops, and remind them when it’s the final week and/or day of a promotion or when a product is discontinued.

Great for Analytics

Most newsletter plugins are great for analytics about how effective the newsletter was. It should tell you:

  • How many people are signed up for the newsletter
  • If the newsletter was successfully delivered;
  • How many people opened the email;
  • How many people used the newsletter to get to the site;
  • Which newsletters are more successful;
  • When is the best time to send newsletters;
  • How many people are unsubscribing (and possibly why).

What to Put in a Newsletter

Now that we established what are the benefits of a newsletter, let’s go over how to put together a newsletter.

Logo/Brand’s Name

At the top of the newsletter should be the brand’s logo and name so people not only are reminded of the brand but also can verify that the newsletter came from the brand and not a copycat or scammer. Some emails that look like they are from a brand but are really from a scammer are missing the logo or have a knockoff of the logo. Users that have keen eyes can usually spot the difference; so make sure to include yours in all its glory.

News/Updates

The next part of the newsletter is what most people will read so make sure it is whatever is most important. I would put any company news and updates along with coming sales and promotions, but make sure whatever you put is most critical for the newsletter and is easy to scan.

Praise for Customers and/or Employees

People like to be noticed and gratified. Thanking your customers for their continued patronage and support occasionally in a newsletter is a good way to make your customers feel appreciated. If an employee or particular department did something particularly well or noteworthy to the brand, feel free to praise them publicly; employees like to be appreciated and noticed as well.

Products/Services

Whether it just be a small link or an entire section, newsletters should have a way to get readers to the brand’s website (and hopefully sales funnel). I would list the brands featured products/services with nice pictures and a nice ‘learn more’ button to entice readers to the site.

Legal

At the bottom of the newsletter should be a footer with legal stuff showing the copyright of the logo and newsletter and the year for the copyright. If applicable, any fine print and asterisks should be in the footer as well.
